As more people see our flock, or pictures of them, we have been asked the same question on multiple occasions.
" Why don't they all look the same? Why did you mix up the breeds?"
I have come up with one answer to this question to ease inquiring minds - If we adopted 10 of the same breed, how could we possibly name them? I haven't had a rebuttal yet! LOL
Just like children, we are watching their individual personalities take root. Some are spunky and love scratching pine shavings on their siblings. Others are quiet followers. Some nestle down on your lap as you pick them up to handle. A couple even love to stand and peep at top volume, which isn't very loud, just for attention.
Our list of names is ready, but until we better learn the quirks of each chick, we are holding off on naming.
NAMING HAS BEGUN.... (April 3, 2011)
Today, Lexi named the first hen - Vanilla. (see her lovely pic below) Vanilla is one our most outgoing chicks. She is a curious White Rock and will approach the kids' hands and stand calmly as they pet her.

Double Stuff - This bird was Cookies and Cream, but since she must be the alpha and has yet to stop growing, she is now referred to as Double Stuff. Double Stuff makes the funniest noises and is the most vocal of all our gals. She will talk to you while you work in the garden... if she sees someone near, she starts talking non-stop... she is like a little alarm system for the coop and run.
Fluffly Fluffy (as named by Linc) - The runt of the flock, but SUPER fast, and still very anxious and nervous - but Linc still talks to her daily and adores her!
Glitter (as named by Ella) - This feisty Rhode Island Red hen is a true fireball!
G.G. - Beats to her own drum and is quirky, but so lovable and oddly fascinating! She is in everyone's business, but in a good kind of way.
Goldilocks - This gal is calm, and although liked being handled when in the basement, now that she has tasted freedom, she isn't such a lap hen anymore outdoors.
Tiger - her feathers have a cool tiger stripe throughout them. She is actually the kids' biggest fan and enjoys sitting on laps in the run, and calmly tolerates being handled all the time by the kids.
Thadarina - named after a friend of Mike, Thadius, but since they are all girls, we had to improvise. She is our largest, heaviest bird and she also was the first to have her comb and waddles turn BRIGHT red.
Coo-Coo-De-Coo - as a small chick, when her feathers started coming in, her head resembled bed-head, which in our house we call "Coocoo-decoos."
Secret - since our neighbor Vicki owns this one, we decided it would be funny to own a bird we can refer to as Victoria's Secret. lol) **Remember we are the same family that named our 92 lb. Great Dane, "Kitty" simply to see people's reactions.
