Our Extended Family

EGGS, EGGS, EGGS....

Well, the chicks turned 4 months old on July 24th.  Glitter surprised us all with a very special birthday gift - her first, as well as our first, EGG!  Oh the excitement!  I think the kids are still in awe that the chicks have begun their duties.  At once this seemed so far away, and now that it is here, Lexi had to call anyone she could think of, to share the BIG news!  LOL  (Maybe you got a call?)

So, Sunday was Glitter's day.  Then Monday, Double Stuff laid her first egg! 

We are up to 4 eggs, as of today.  It is certainly just the beginning of our next chapter in chicken farming.  We continue to learn as we go!  


The song that the hens sing is quite memorable.  Farmer Bob tried prepping us for this song, but I don't think we truly knew what we were listening for.  However, now that we have experienced it, we are able to tell when to check our hen boxes for fresh eggs.  

The size of the eggs is also pretty neat.  They are still mini eggs at the moment.  In comparison to store bought eggs, which is all most people know, these eggs are easily half the size.  With time, these eggs will increase in size.  

Pickles

Thanks to Brunty Farms, we were able to get a bushel of cucumbers two weeks ago.  With those 50 lbs. of cucumbers, we have preserved kosher dill, sweet, and even some spicy dills.  Many are still curing in their sealed jars, but of what we have tested so far, we have achieved success!  

Yes, we have lots of cucumbers growing in the garden too, but we are using those for daily raw snacks to enjoy, since it is hard to get pickling crocks going with only 3-5 cukes ready every few days.


So, to date this summer, we have canned and preserved:

• strawberry jam
• cherry chutney
• cherry jam
• cherry sauce
• pickles

And don't forget the freezer full of:

• strawberries
•  blueberries

For the first time ever, the peach trees in the yard are hanging in there and we may actually be able to harvest our own homegrown peaches.... that is, if we can keep the deer from them long enough to let them finish ripening!

Peach season should be here any day now - and then apples will be just around the corner!  We can't wait!

Hard work

As much as I post the fun times, we are doing our fair share of hard work around here as well!  I took a quick moment to capture my hard working farmhands this week.  Together one morning, after swim lessons, we came home to clean the coop out.  The kids and I were able to tackle the job quickly with 4 sets of hands helping!  

It is responsibilities like this, where there was no whining, just honest hard work, that I am extra grateful for this adventure.   Life isn't all fun and games - the kiddos are certainly aware of this lesson loud and clear!  However, I am happy to report, at this moment in time, not a single one of them is complaining!  Go kiddos!

Welcome to the Funny Farm....

We have been toying around with a name for our suburban farm.  This is not a necessity, but something fun, and a typically leads to great discussions with the kids.  (I have had many laughs from their suggestions!)  However, tonight, as I uploaded some new shots, I believe we may have decided... check out these snap shots that couldn't possibly better represent our adventure and the memories we are creating along the way here at Giggle, Giggle, Cluck Farm.
